Function Coffee Labs
Function is a coffee snob's heaven. It has a beautiful coffee themed mural, and big helpful signs about different single origin coffees that are available. If you care deeply about the grind of your coffee, and often think to yourself, "This coffee has notes of cherry and a grassy finish," then Function is the place to go to geek out over the coffees they carry, and talk coffee with Ross, the owner. I will admit that I really love coffee but I never pick up notes of anything except pure bliss, so this kind of geeking out is not for me. But I did appreciate that this was a quiet, cool spot to work and focus. Like most of their coffee shop brethren, Function has some pastries, including a few that are savory, but nothing more substantial than a muffin.
Crucial to my enjoyment of a coffee shop is natural light, and Function has it in droves with big picture windows. On one side it looks out into a little shady park, a perfect place for kids on scooters or bikes to play or draw with chalk. I anticipate coming here with the kiddos to pick up coffee before heading out to play afterwards.
What I worried about at Function: In Philly we elect our judges, which is a dumb system. (Did you know that Joe Frazier's daughter is a judge in Philadelphia? She once fought Muhammed Ali's daughter in a highly promoted match.) I worry about not finishing my work on deadline, and then I worry that worry is just a form of stalling. I worry about filling out reams of paperwork, and about figuring out what we're having for dinner.
